Everyone appreciates a good value. We all hear stories of amazing investments – for example, if you bought 100 shares of Apple stock at $22 a share in 1980, today you would have 22,400 shares, worth a total of approximately $4.3 million. However, if we care about value, the scriptures tell us to look beyond money to things worth even more.

In 1 Peter 1, Peter calls attention to four things of greater worth than silver or gold:

1. An inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you… (1 Peter 1:3-4)

2. Your faith

These [trials] have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1 Peter 1:7)

3. The sacrifice and death of Jesus

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. (1 Peter 1:18-19)

 4. The Word of God

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”  (1 Peter 1:23-25)

If we believe Peter, the most important things in life are not financial. We have an eternal inheritance, that will not develop dry rot or fall behind market trends. It will remain as rich and perfect as when it was secured for us. We should value our faith. It is exceedingly precious to God, and therefore we should not be surprised at the cost it takes to build and purify it in us, even great trials. The precious blood of Jesus which redeemed us is far more costly than money. God spent – poured out – the most valuable thing He had, His only Son, to purchase us and cover our sins.

All these truths have been revealed to us through the living and enduring Word of God. Good and accurate information is so precious and hard to come by today! Yet God has given us the most dependable rock in the universe to stand on – His own Word which does not change.

I pray that your life is built on such things. If it isn’t yet, it can be! Talk to God today through His Son Jesus, who gave His life so we can have life with Him.
